What are cannabinoids?

Cannabis contains substances known as phytocannabinoids (a subcategory of
cannabinoids) which interact with receptors in our Endocannabinoid system.
*Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, such as THC and
CBD. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids created in the human body, such as
anandamide and 2-AG (short of 2-arachidonylglycerol).

Cannabinoids

  • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) exists in cannabis in an acid form which turns
into THC, a psychoactive substance, when it undergoes decarboxylation
(heating up). THC has many therapeutic benefits such as: Pain relief, Anxiety
relief, PTSD relief, Stimulation of appetite, Increased Focused, Increased
    creativity, Increased relaxation
  • CBD (Cannabidiol) exists in acid form until it undergoes decarboxylation. It’s
therapeutic benefits can include: Pain relief, Anxiety relief, Inflammation
reduction, PTSD relief, Ease diabetic complications, Inhibit arthritis
symptoms, Protect against neurological disease, Used in treatment of certain
    epilepsy, Reduce THC psychoactive effects
  • CBN (Cannabinol) “is one of the more than 100 rare cannabinoids found in
the Cannabis plant. CBN is found in aged Cannabis and is a degradant of
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) after exposure to air, light and heat.” (inmed)
  • CBG (cannabigerol) which starts as CBGA, is often called the mother of all
cannabinoids. Unless bread to do otherwise, CBGA turns into CBDA and
THCA as the plant grows. Very little of it turns into CBG.
  • CBDA and THCA also have possible medicinal uses. Studies have been done
exploring the use of CBDA against COVID-19
    (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abi6110)
  • Anandamide “a naturally occurring arachidonic acid derivative, present in
some foods and in mammalian brains, where it acts as a messenger
molecule and plays a role in pain, depression, appetite, memory, and fertility.”
    (dictionary)
  • 2-AG “is an endocannabinoid that activates the cannabinoid CB1 receptor. It
is involved in a wide array of (patho)physiological functions, such as emotion,
cognition, energy balance, pain sensation and neuroinflammation.” (rider)
  • Delta 8 (Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol) is an intoxicatingly psychoactive
cannabinoid with effects similar to delta-9 THC, though much milder. It is
typically manufactured from hemp-derived CBD and therefore exists in a
legal gray area and is not as heavily regulated as THC.
