What is cannabis?
Cannabis is a complex plant. It has uses both medicinally and recreationally
(through consumption and application) and practically (for the production of paper,
clothes, etc.)
“Under the scientific classification and definition of cannabis, both hemp and
marijuana are part of the Cannabaceae family and both are further classified as
Cannabis sativa L. As such, both are cannabis.” (weedmaps)
- Throughout all training and material, the term marijuana will not be used, instead the term cannabis will be used and we will specify “hemp” when addressing anything that applies only to hemp and not all cannabis.
Cannabis contains substances known as phytocannabinoids (a subcategory of
cannabinoids) which interact with receptors in our Endocannabinoid system.
- Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, such as THC and CBD. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids created in the human body, such as anandamide and 2-AG (short of 2-arachidonylglycerol).
